The New York Post reported that Wendy Weissman, identified as a World Series of Poker player, became locked in a dispute with an Airbnb guest at her Hermosa Beach, California, townhouse after a 30-day rental did not end as planned. According to the Post, Weissman had rented the $1.9 million property, a few blocks from the beach, to Evhan Lamarck, a Frenchman, for a booking tied to a $12,500-a-month home.

The Post, citing ABC7 and the Daily Mail, said Lamarck stayed beyond the original rental period and ultimately paid for 48 days, while Weissman alleged he refused to leave when asked. The article says he invoked California occupancy rules that can require a court eviction process once a guest has stayed long enough to be treated as a tenant. Weissman said pursuing removal through court could have meant months of lost income and major expense while she remained responsible for mortgage and tax costs.

Police reportedly treated the matter as civil, and Weissman said Airbnb initially directed her to local law enforcement. The situation changed after a water leak at the home led Weissman to declare an emergency and arrange for a plumber, according to the Post. Lamarck and others then left the property in a U-Haul, the report said.

Afterward, Weissman alleged the home was left dirty and damaged, with losses still amounting to several thousand dollars after insurance and Airbnb coverage. Airbnb told the Daily Mail that cases like this are uncommon, said it was in contact with the host, and removed the guest from its platform. The case highlights the risks short-term rental hosts can face when local tenant-protection rules intersect with extended stays.
