Underwater drones discover coral reefs off Benin, long presumed dead, teeming with life - Phys.org

What the report says

Phys.Org, citing a peer-reviewed study in Frontiers in Marine Science, reported that scientists have confirmed living coral reef communities off the coast of Benin in West Africa, decades after earlier surveys had treated a possible deep-water reef there as likely dead. The new work was led by Gérard Zinzindohoué of the Institut de Recherches Halieutiques et Océanologiques du Bénin and published July 20, 2026.

According to the report, researchers used historical survey records from the 1960s to guide a modern search of 11.5 kilometers of seabed. Sonar detected two features that could be reefs, and the team then used an underwater drone and the Deep Sea Camera System from the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab to examine the seafloor visually.

The imagery showed what the researchers described as an apparently healthy mesophotic coral ecosystem — a deeper reef environment with limited light — more than 50 meters below the surface. The team observed patchy coral growth on rocky areas rather than a continuous barrier, along with eight coral types and eight fish species, including golden African snappers, Guinean angelfish and three-banded butterflyfish. The researchers said species identifications still need confirmation because samples have not yet been collected.

The finding matters because the authors say it is the first confirmed evidence, to their knowledge, of a living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the Gulf of Guinea continental shelf. Phys.Org reported that the team views the discovery as an early step: further diving, sampling and wider surveys would be needed to determine the reef’s extent, condition and whether other undocumented coral systems exist nearby.
