UNBS Cuts Import Clearance Time From Three Days to Three Hours

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards says its new Imports Electronic Portal has cut clearance time for compliant import consignments from three days to about three hours. According to Nile Post, the system is part of UNBS’s effort to digitise inspection and clearance procedures for imported goods and make the process easier for importers and clearing agents.

UNBS said the portal can be accessed remotely through a dashboard, computer or smartphone, provided users have a Tax Identification Number and email address. The agency also said the platform automatically assigns import entries to inspectors, integrates with Uganda Revenue Authority Customs, generates payment references, and issues clearance certificates for consignments approved for release. It added that automatic allocation is meant to improve efficiency, reduce conflicts of interest and limit corruption risks.

The rollout has been accompanied by sensitisation meetings with importers, clearing agents and other stakeholders in places including Busia, Malaba, Mbale and Jinja. UNBS officials said the portal was introduced in response to complaints about delays in the inspection and clearance process.
