UN extends Darfur arms embargo, blocks broader Sudan sanctions proposal

What the report says
The United Nations Security Council has prolonged its arms embargo on Sudan’s Darfur region for two months, while rejecting a US-backed push to extend the restrictions across the entire country. According to Al Jazeera, the council adopted the renewal unanimously on Thursday, after Russia and China opposed broader sanctions language. The current measures now run until December 11, and the expert panel that monitors them will continue until January 11, 2027.
The sanctions regime was originally created in 2005 and includes an arms embargo on armed actors in Darfur, plus travel bans and asset freezes on designated individuals and entities. Al Jazeera reported that the latest renewal was described by the UN as a short-term technical extension to allow further negotiations. Washington argued the existing framework no longer matched the scale of the war, but Moscow and Beijing said they favored keeping the current scope unchanged.
The dispute comes as fighting between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023, continues to devastate the country. Al Jazeera reported that the war has killed at least 59,000 people, displaced about 13 million, and pushed parts of Sudan into famine, with Darfur among the hardest-hit areas. The stalled expansion of sanctions highlights continuing divisions inside the Security Council over how to respond to the conflict.
