UMSC Launches Official Cloaks for County Sheikhs to Promote Clerical Identity

What the report says
The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has introduced official cloaks for County Sheikhs across Uganda, according to Nile Post, in a step it says is meant to improve uniformity, dignity and public recognition of clerics serving under the council. The launch took place at the Jinja Muslim District Council headquarters in Jinja City and drew senior Muslim leaders, district kadhis, county sheikhs and committee members.
UMSC Secretary for Religious Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdunoor Ssali said the attire is intended to help distinguish recognised clergy under the council and make them easier for members of the public to identify. He also said the new dress code is meant to reinforce a sense of order and respect in the performance of clerical duties. Busoga Muslim Regional Assistant to the Mufti Sheikh Hussein Muhammad Bbowa welcomed the initiative and described it as timely.
The event also highlighted an ongoing dispute over Muslim property in Jinja. District Kadhi Sheikh Ismail Adi Basoga raised concerns about land he said belongs to the Muslim community and noted that the matter has been contested for years. He said efforts to secure the title had involved intervention at high levels, including support from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, according to the report.
Nile Post also reported that Sheikh Bukenya launched the cloaks on behalf of Mufti Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje and conveyed a message from him after a recent relief visit to Karamoja. In broader context, religious institutions often use official dress to signal authority and identity, especially where communities want clearer distinction between recognised leaders and others.
