UMSC Declares National Day of Prayer in Honour of Gen. Moses Ali

Watchdog Uganda reports that the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has set Wednesday, July 22, 2026, as a national day of prayer for Rt. Hon. Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, the former Second Deputy Prime Minister and veteran public figure who has died. The prayers are to coincide with his burial in Adjumani District, where he is expected to be laid to rest at his ancestral home.

According to the report, UMSC Secretary General Haji Abbas Ssekyanzi Muluubya issued a circular on behalf of the Mufti of Uganda, Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, directing UMSC structures countrywide to participate. Mosques under the council have been instructed to hold Swalatul Janazah in absentia after the relevant congregational prayers, allowing Muslims who cannot travel to Adjumani to join in religious observance from their local areas.

The council also asked UMSC offices, institutions and other establishments to pause routine work so leaders, staff and members of the Muslim community can take part. Watchdog Uganda says the directive follows tributes from Muslim leaders who described Gen. Ali as a supporter of Islamic institutions in Uganda, including his reported role in the establishment of the Islamic University in Uganda and as one of the founding figures associated with UMSC.

The outlet reports that Gen. Ali died at Nakasero Hospital after an illness. His death is significant because of his long presence in Uganda’s military and political life, as well as the prominent role attributed to him within the Muslim community.
