What the report says

Al Jazeera reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected at the White House on Tuesday for talks with US President Donald Trump, as the US Senate prepares to consider a long-delayed sanctions bill targeting Russia. Reuters, cited by Al Jazeera, reported that Zelenskyy is also due to attend the funeral of US Senator Lindsey Graham and meet senators later in the day.

The sanctions measure, backed by Graham, would raise pressure on Moscow by placing 100 percent tariffs on goods from the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India, if passed. Al Jazeera says Trump has moved to add Iran sanctions to the same legislation, and Zelenskyy has publicly indicated support for that idea in an interview with Trump ally Laura Loomer.

The report frames the diplomacy around a widening overlap between the wars involving Ukraine and Iran. Al Jazeera says Ukraine attacked an Iranian tanker in the Caspian Sea on Saturday, with Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, saying the vessel was transporting drones and military components to Russia. Iran has said it will retaliate. Former US ambassador William Courtney told Al Jazeera that Kyiv’s action could align with US hostility toward Iran, while cautioning Ukraine may not want close association with Washington’s war on Iran.

The meeting also comes amid improved Trump-Zelenskyy ties after tensions in early 2025. Al Jazeera notes recent US-Ukraine cooperation on Patriot interceptor production and possible joint drone manufacturing, while fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, including deadly Russian strikes reported Monday and heavy combat in Donetsk region.
