Ukraine’s Zelenskyy meets with far-right US activist Laura Loomer

Al Jazeera, citing its staff and The Associated Press, reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with and was interviewed by Laura Loomer, a far-right American activist and prominent supporter of US President Donald Trump. Loomer said the interview took place on Thursday for her programme on Rumble, after telling her large X following that she had been mistaken in echoing Russian propaganda about Ukraine.

The meeting marks a notable shift for Loomer, who had previously criticised US support for Kyiv and described Ukraine in terms aligned with Russian narratives used to defend Moscow’s 2022 full-scale invasion. Al Jazeera reported that Loomer now argues Russia is supporting Iran with weapons used to kill US soldiers, and she said she was unconcerned if anti-Ukraine Republicans reject her new position. Zelenskyy’s office said on Tuesday that her visit mattered because she could see conditions in Ukraine directly.

Al Jazeera also outlined Loomer’s broader profile, noting her anti-Muslim rhetoric, pro-Israel activism, support for Trump’s deportation policies and reported personal closeness to the president, while emphasizing that she does not hold an official administration post. The article said she received Pentagon press credentials last year and has claimed involvement in actions against individuals she accused or criticised in immigration-related contexts.

The encounter could be politically significant because Trump and parts of his movement have questioned US backing for Ukraine. The current administration has sought a negotiated end to the war, but Al Jazeera reported that Trump’s contacts with Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin have not yet produced a breakthrough.
