Ukraine’s SBU security service said drones hit an oil platform, a Russian missile boat and sanctioned cargo ships. Iran’s ambassador to Russia said the vessel, named Anna, was anchored near the Volga River’s mouth when it was attacked. Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel said it was carrying drone and missile components to Russia, not civilian goods.

Iran said one sailor was killed and several people were injured, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the incident could not go unanswered. Tehran also denied intervening in the Russia-Ukraine war. The BBC notes that Iran and Russia have developed close military ties since 2022, including Moscow’s use of modified Shahed drones originally supplied by Iran.
