Ukraine beheads its military as its performance begins to soar

Al Jazeera reported that Ukraine has carried out an unusual wartime shake-up of both its political defence leadership and senior military command, despite what the outlet described as improving battlefield performance. Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov was removed on July 15, followed six days later by the replacement of Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskii, with other senior figures also departing.

According to the report, the changes came amid debate inside Ukraine over strategy, especially the role of unmanned systems. Al Jazeera cited Syrskii as arguing after his dismissal that battlefield strategy and operational planning fall to the commander-in-chief, not the defence minister. The article said Fedorov had pushed rapid drone procurement, while Syrskii cautioned that Ukraine could not quickly reorient a large army around drones alone, given Russia’s advantages in artillery, aviation and infantry.

The report said Ukraine’s expanding drone campaign has helped slow Russia’s advances and strike logistics, energy facilities, shipping and military assets, including in Crimea and deeper inside Russia. It cited Ukrainian and Institute for the Study of War figures indicating heavy Russian manpower losses and limited net territorial gains in 2026, while noting Moscow has increasingly used ballistic missiles in attacks on Ukrainian cities and port infrastructure.

The leadership changes matter because they point to tension over how Ukraine should sustain its defence and offensive pressure as the war evolves. Al Jazeera framed the reshuffle as unprecedented because it affected top defence and military posts at the same time, raising questions over whether Kyiv will double down on drone-led warfare, rebalance toward conventional forces, or combine both approaches under new leadership.
