Downing Street has reiterated that UK support for the Falkland Islands is "unwavering" after Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, renewed Buenos Aires’ claim to the territory and threatened sanctions against companies linked to oil development nearby. BBC World News reported that the remarks were made as Milei said the islands were historically and legally Argentinian and argued that Britain’s presence in the South Atlantic should end.

A UK government spokesperson said the position of the islanders was central to Britain’s approach, noting that residents voted overwhelmingly in a 2013 referendum to remain a British overseas territory. The spokesperson also said British armed forces remain ready to protect UK interests. In separate comments, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Defence Secretary Wes Streeting both said Britain would uphold the islanders’ right to self-determination.

The dispute has long been a source of tension between the two countries, more than four decades after the 1982 war. BBC World News said Milei singled out the Sea Lion oilfield, where a British-Israeli partnership plans exploration and future production, as a particular concern. The companies involved said they hold valid licences from the Falkland Islands authorities and do not expect the latest political developments to affect their timetable. The reporting also noted that Argentina already has laws allowing restrictions on some activities it regards as unauthorized in the islands.
