British Prime Minister Andy Burnham used his first Prime Minister’s Questions appearance in the House of Commons since taking office in July to defend his government’s priorities and present a message of renewal. Burnham said his administration would fully fund the Defence Investment Plan and set out a path to meet NATO commitments by 2035. He also faced criticism from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch over how the government plans to pay for its pledges, as borrowing remains elevated. Burnham responded by blaming market turbulence on the previous Conservative government and said he was trying to balance fiscal discipline with support for households hit by a cost-of-living squeeze.

The prime minister also linked domestic policy to wider security concerns, urging cross-party solidarity with Germany and Ukraine after a reported attempted attack on Leipzig/Halle airport that German authorities have blamed on Russia. He again emphasized a more hopeful political tone, saying his government wants to put more power into local communities and “bring back hope.”

Burnham said he will publish a 10-year plan before the end of the year, with proposals for greater public control over essential services such as energy and water. Al Jazeera reported that his government has already announced relief measures, including a cut to household electricity bills and tax help for pubs and hospitality businesses.
