The United Kingdom has announced a ban on imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, according to Al Jazeera, marking what Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described in Parliament as a major reset in British policy toward Israel. The move was presented alongside tougher restrictions on arms-related exports and wider sanctions measures, and it follows the UK’s recognition of Palestinian statehood last year.

Miliband said the policy is aimed at illegal settlements and settlement expansion rather than Israel as a country. He also said the government wants to use its human rights sanctions framework more quickly to deter expansion, including efforts to prevent the proposed E1 settlement project, which he said could sever the West Bank. In his remarks, he criticized settlement violence against Palestinians and said the government views such acts as extremist.

Al Jazeera reported that the ban covers all goods from settlements, sanctions on people and businesses involved in construction, infrastructure, financing and real estate tied to settlement growth, and a prohibition on UK advertising for settlement property sales. It also includes refusing new export licences for weapons and other exports that materially contribute to the occupation, while exempting products and services from Israel itself.
