What the report says

The Uganda Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (UGEITI) said it will publish its fifth extractives report on September 23 in Kampala, according to The Independent Uganda. The release is expected to update the public on Uganda’s oil, gas and mining sectors, covering areas such as revenues, production, company participation and the sector’s role in the wider economy.

At a press briefing at the Ministry of Finance headquarters, UGEITI National Coordinator Saul Ongaria said transparency and accountability in managing natural resources are important for meeting the goals of the Fourth National Development Plan and Uganda’s broader economic transformation agenda. He said the event is meant to bring together government agencies, private-sector actors and development partners to improve information sharing and strengthen investor confidence.

The report is also coming as Uganda prepares for oil production and looks to expand the economic value of its mineral resources. Clovice Bright Irumba of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda said it would give stakeholders a chance to review findings and ask questions. Arthur Bainomugisha of ACODE urged citizens to remain central in decisions about extractive resources, warning about the risk of elite capture.

UGEITI said the report is intended to make information on production, government revenues, local-content opportunities and environmental and social impacts more accessible. Uganda joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in 2020. The Independent also noted that Uganda’s extractive sector includes proven petroleum resources and a mining industry that contributes a small share of GDP and government revenue, underscoring why the sector is seen as increasingly important.
