What the report says

Ugandans living in Khartoum marked Uganda’s 64th Independence Anniversary at a working lunch held on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Bab Al Yemen Restaurant, bringing together members of the Ugandan community and officials from the Ugandan Embassy in Sudan. According to Watchdog Uganda, the event took place against the backdrop of Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which has affected daily life and the welfare of foreign nationals, including Ugandans.

Uganda’s Ambassador to Sudan, Dr Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, used the occasion to urge unity among Ugandans in the diaspora and to encourage them to protect their country’s image while contributing to national development. He also paid tribute to those who fought for Uganda’s independence and praised the government’s leadership on peace, development and regional cooperation. The ambassador expressed sympathy for families facing displacement, uncertainty and loss in Sudan, while saying the embassy remained available to offer consular support within its mandate.

The report says the commemoration followed a diplomatic meeting on October 14 between Ssemuddu and Ambassador Khalid Alkheir, who heads the Africa Department at Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. That meeting focused on bilateral relations and ways to deepen cooperation. The ambassador also highlighted Uganda’s embassy returning to Khartoum as a sign of solidarity and continued engagement with Sudanese authorities.

During the gathering, Ssemuddu asked Ugandans in Sudan to register with the embassy, update their contact details, keep documents safe and respect local laws. He also encouraged community members to support one another and to use education, trade, investment and professional links to strengthen Uganda-Sudan relations.
