Ugandans Complete Fiber Optic Training to Boost Local Content in Oil and Gas Sector

Twenty Ugandans have finished a five-day fiber optic technician course in Namanve, Uganda, through a partnership between SINOPEC Uganda and Solid Rock Group. According to Nile Post, the training was designed to build skills that can help more Ugandans take part in the country’s developing oil and gas industry and support wider local content goals.

The participants came from districts linked to Uganda’s petroleum activity, including Hoima, Buliisa, Nwoya, Pakwach and Masindi, as well as Kampala, Mukono and Masaka. The programme combined classroom lessons and practical work in cable handling, fusion splicing, testing, troubleshooting, installation and network maintenance. Trainees are also preparing for the internationally recognised Certified Fiber Optics Technician qualification.

Nile Post reported that speakers at the graduation linked the training to Uganda’s National Content policy, which aims to increase citizen participation in the benefits of petroleum investment. Rosette Komugisha of TotalEnergies EP Uganda said developing skilled Ugandans is important for local jobs and businesses, while SINOPEC Uganda’s Solomon Hans Ruyonga said the response to the programme showed strong demand for specialised technical skills.

The article also noted that the new skills are not limited to oil and gas. Fiber optic knowledge is increasingly relevant in telecommunications and other infrastructure sectors, which could widen employment opportunities for the graduates as Uganda continues building its industrial base.
