Ugandan Students Unveil AI Solutions Through Uganda-Japan Innovation Partnership

Nile Post reported that 38 students from Makerere University, the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology and the International University of East Africa have produced six artificial intelligence tools under the Uganda-Japan AI-POD Internship Project. The programme was run through a partnership between Japan’s Akademia Limited and Uganda’s National ICT Innovation Hub, and the technologies were presented at the project’s closing showcase.

According to the report, the student teams developed an AI Translation Checker, an AI Interview Assistant, an AI Avatar platform, AI World for virtual collaboration, AI-DOJO for language learning and an AI-powered recruitment platform. Organisers said some of the products are moving into pilot testing and are being prepared for possible commercial use in areas such as tourism, business process outsourcing, recruitment and language training.

The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, speaking through remarks linked to the National ICT Innovation Hub, described the programme as an example of how partnerships can support local digital talent and help turn student innovations into job-creating businesses. Japanese technology entrepreneur Gen Suzuki, who spearheaded the internship, said Uganda was chosen because of the promise shown by its young people, and that the intake grew from an initial plan of 12 students to nearly 40 after strong applications.

Nile Post also reported that the initiative has led to the creation of DynaWisdom, a Ugandan company intended to commercialise AI-POD technologies with Akademia Limited, under President Moses Musoke. The development matters because it signals a push to position Uganda not only as a user of AI tools but also as a producer of locally relevant technology.
