Ugandan photographer Peter Kuloba wins Safal Eye In The Wild competition

The Independent Uganda reported that Ugandan photographer Peter Kuloba was named overall winner of the Safal Eye In The Wild photography competition at an awards event in Nairobi, Kenya, on July 18, 2026. Kuloba won the Gold Award and a $3,000 prize for his image, “Disappearing Snowcaps of the Rwenzori Mountains,” which depicts a mountain guide looking toward a melting glacier on Mount Stanley, home to Margherita Peak in the Rwenzori range along the Uganda-DR Congo border.

According to the report, the competition drew professional, amateur and young photographers from across Africa, with entries focused on nature, communities and sustainable development. Safal Group organizes the regional contest, which The Independent described as a platform using photography to promote environmental conservation and education in East and Southern Africa. In Uganda, it was launched through Uganda Baati Limited and the Safal Uganda Baati Foundation.

At the Nairobi ceremony, Kuloba said the recognition was a major moment in his photography career and noted that it was his third attempt in the competition. Uganda Baati Chief Executive Officer George Arodi and external affairs head Jackie Tahakanizibwa praised the win as a significant achievement for Ugandan creative talent and said such work can help stimulate conservation conversations.

The Independent described Kuloba as a self-taught Uganda-based photographer who has spent about a decade documenting culture, nature and adventure. The report also noted that he previously won the Uganda Press Photo Awards overall prize in 2020 and 2023.
