Uganda: Uganda Takes 'Pearl Sweet' Crude to Global Market At Appec 2026

The move comes as the country advances toward first oil production and seeks to position its crude before refiners, traders and investors in the global petroleum market.

The article says the branding followed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s earlier naming of the crude during a visit to the Kingfisher Development Area. Energy and Mineral Development Minister Monica Musenero Masanza formally unveiled Pearl Sweet at the conference and described it as part of Uganda’s effort to present its oil sector as commercially viable and attractive to investors.

The name combines Uganda’s “Pearl of Africa” identity with the crude’s low sulfur content, which the ministry says makes it a heavy, sweet crude with characteristics useful for refining. The report says this can support production of very low sulfur fuel oil and may appeal to refiners in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. More broadly, the article places the launch within Uganda’s wider oil development program, which includes the Tilenga, Kingfisher and East African Crude Oil Pipeline projects.

The Independent also reports that Uganda’s petroleum resource base is estimated at 6.5 billion barrels of oil in place, with around 1.4 billion barrels recoverable, alongside natural gas resources.
