What the report says

Uganda has released preliminary results from the 2025 Uganda Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment (UPHIA), showing HIV prevalence at 5.9% among people aged 15 years and above. The findings were released by the Ministry of Health in partnership with Makerere University School of Public Health, with support from the United States Government, according to the report distributed by AllAfrica from Nile Post.

The survey is a nationally representative household study that measures HIV prevalence and related indicators such as incidence and viral load suppression. It also gathered information on HIV-related risk behaviours and access to prevention, care and treatment services. In this round, the assessment additionally included selected non-communicable disease indicators such as raised blood pressure, raised blood glucose and obesity.

The new figure is only slightly above the 5.8% reported in the 2020-2021 UPHIA round, offering a updated benchmark for tracking Uganda’s HIV response. Health authorities are expected to use the results to help refine prevention, testing and treatment programmes and to identify groups or areas that may need more attention.

More broadly, UPHIA is intended to show how the country is progressing against HIV and where gaps remain. The latest release adds current evidence for policymakers and public health partners as Uganda continues efforts to expand services and strengthen its response to the epidemic.
