Uganda: Uganda Gives Its Oil a Name. Now It Has to Find a Market

Uganda has officially named its crude oil “Pearl Sweet,” a label unveiled by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Sept. 2, 2026, during a visit to the Kingfisher Oil Development Area in Kikuube District. The naming comes nearly 20 years after Uganda announced it had found commercially viable oil in the Albertine Graben, and it signals a shift from years of planning and debate toward the practical challenge of selling the resource.

According to The Independent, the name is meant to help position Uganda’s crude in international trade, where oil is marketed by grade and quality rather than national origin alone. Uganda National Oil Company chief executive Proscovia Nabbanja said the new identity gives the crude a recognizable name, while Energy Minister Monica Musenero Masanza linked “Pearl” to Uganda’s national image and “Sweet” to the crude’s low sulphur content. The oil from the TotalEnergies-operated Tilenga area and CNOOC Uganda’s Kingfisher area is expected to be processed at Kabaale shared facilities in Hoima before moving through the 1,443-kilometre East African Crude Oil Pipeline to Tanzania’s Tanga port.

The report notes that the naming does not resolve the bigger commercial test ahead: Uganda must still find buyers, compete with other crude grades, and prove it can deliver consistent volumes at marketable quality. That makes export pricing, refining interest and long-term demand central issues as the country moves closer to first production.
