What the report says

Uganda’s tourism sector posted stronger results in 2025, with international arrivals rising 19.7% to 1,642,215 and tourism receipts climbing to about US$1.62 billion, according to a performance review covered by Nile Post. The report says visitor numbers were above the 2019 level, suggesting the sector has moved beyond its pre-pandemic benchmark. Officials said tourism remains important for foreign exchange, jobs, household income and investment.

The figures were presented at the 4th Annual Tourism Development Programme Performance Review Conference in Kampala, which focused on how digital technology and artificial intelligence could shape the sector’s next phase. The meeting brought together government, private-sector actors, development partners and other stakeholders to assess progress and identify priorities.

Nile Post reported that Africa remained Uganda’s main source region for visitors, with Kenya and Rwanda among key markets, while overseas arrivals were led by India and the United States. The average stay increased to 8.8 nights, helping lift spending. Tourism expenditure was concentrated in accommodation, food and drinks, transport, and travel services, showing that the sector supports a broader slice of the economy.

Officials also pointed to ongoing challenges, including limited destination marketing, infrastructure gaps, low budget support and weak compliance with service standards. The ministry said stronger promotion, better connectivity and wider use of digital tools will be needed to sustain growth and reach Uganda’s longer-term tourism ambitions.
