What the report says

The Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda has clarified that the official nine-day mourning period for King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV will begin only after his body reaches Karuzika Palace in Fort Portal. The update, reported by The Independent and distributed by AllAfrica, corrects earlier indications that mourning had already started after the king’s death was announced.

King Oyo died on Thursday evening while receiving medical treatment in the United States. He was 34. The kingdom first suggested that mourning and related traditional rites would begin the following day, but later said the start of the formal period depends on the arrival of the remains at the palace. A statement read by Fr. Charles Oyo said the king’s body will go directly from the airport to Karuzika Palace and will remain there during the mourning period.

The kingdom said it is still observing traditional protocols while funeral arrangements continue. A five-member communications committee led by Fr. Oyo is handling public information about the death and rites. Omusuga Charles Kamurasi, identified as the head of the royal clan and custodian of funeral and cultural ceremonies, is overseeing the broader arrangements.

King Oyo became monarch in 1995 at age three, making him one of the world’s youngest reigning kings at the time. His death has prompted mourning across the Batooro community and the wider Tooro Kingdom, with preparations underway for the return of his remains and funeral ceremonies.
