Uganda Takes Centre Stage in Africa’s UNESCO Heritage Drive

Dokolo Post reports that Uganda has said it will host the first Workshop for National Focal Points for the Fourth Cycle of UNESCO World Heritage Periodic Reporting in September 2026, positioning the country in a continental effort to strengthen heritage conservation. The announcement was made by Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities Minister Tom R. Butime at a high-level side event held with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the African World Heritage Fund.

According to the report, Butime framed the planned workshop as more than an administrative reporting exercise. He said it would help African countries reinforce heritage institutions, improve management of protected cultural and natural sites, develop professional capacity and expand cooperation across the region. He also pointed to pressures facing African heritage, including climate change, urban growth, conflict and limited technical expertise.

The Fourth Cycle of Periodic Reporting is due to begin in July 2026. Under the World Heritage Convention, periodic reporting is used by States Parties to assess how World Heritage sites are being protected and managed, and to identify gaps requiring support. Dokolo Post says African countries are being encouraged to use the cycle to improve governance, decision-making and representation of African heritage on the World Heritage List.

The side event reportedly brought together African States Parties, UNESCO officials, heritage bodies, universities, site managers, conservation specialists and development partners. The initiative matters because stronger reporting and coordination could help African governments mobilise technical and financial support, involve more heritage professionals and young experts, and shape future global approaches to conserving sites considered to have Outstanding Universal Value.
