Uganda's King of Tooro, once world's youngest reigning monarch, dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the ruler of Uganda’s Tooro kingdom, has died at the age of 34, according to an announcement from the kingdom’s prime minister on Thursday evening, as reported by France24 Africa. The monarch had been crowned in 1995 at the age of three, making him, at the time, the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

France24 said the king died in western Uganda, where the Tooro kingdom is based near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The report did not give a cause of death. It also said a Ugandan government minister had indicated shortly before the announcement that the king was receiving treatment in the United States.

Uganda is a republic, but it retains several traditional kingdoms whose rulers have limited formal political power while remaining culturally influential. France24 noted that King Oyo had assumed full duties as king in later years and that the kingdom said continuity of the crown was assured, with an heir in place.

The death prompted public mourning in Uganda, including messages on social media from political figures such as opposition leader Bobi Wine. The report places the announcement in a broader context of the Tooro monarchy’s continuing symbolic role in Ugandan society.
