Uganda’s Diaspora challenged to move ‘beyond remittances’ at Melbourne Independence Gala

What the report says
Uganda’s diaspora in Australasia was urged to play a larger role in national development beyond sending remittances, as more than 1,000 Ugandans gathered in Melbourne for Uganda’s 64th Independence celebrations. The event, reported by The Independent Uganda, took place over three days and combined cultural festivities with business and diplomatic engagement.
Minister of Local Government Balaam Barugahara represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and delivered a message praising Ugandans abroad for their contribution to the country. In the president’s remarks, diaspora members were encouraged to consider opportunities in manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, technology and value addition, alongside investments that could support industrialisation and job creation. The theme of the celebrations highlighted heritage, partnerships and investment opportunities.
Other officials echoed that message. Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda said Ugandans overseas could become important partners in development when they combine skills, capital and international exposure with opportunities at home. Uganda’s High Commissioner to Australia, Dorothy Samali Hyuha, said the relationship with Australasia should lead to practical outcomes such as trade, investment and institutional partnerships.
The Melbourne programme also featured cultural performances, community leadership messages and consular services, including support on passports and national identity matters. Organisers said the broader aim was to strengthen ties between Uganda and its diaspora while linking cultural pride with economic cooperation and investment promotion.
