Uganda’s Cherop strikes gold in Women’s 5000m at U20 Championships

Uganda secured its first gold medal at the 2026 World Athletics Under-20 Championships when Charity Cherop won the women’s 5,000 metres in Eugene, Oregon, according to The Observer. The race took place on Thursday at Hayward Field, where the 19-year-old moved clear of the lead group late in the final stages and finished in 15:03.88.

Ethiopia’s Shito Gumi took silver in 15:07.91, while Kenya’s Joyline Chepkemoi earned bronze with a personal best of 15:09.08. The result was a step up for Cherop, who had previously won silver at the last World Under-20 Championships in Lima. The Observer reported that she arrived in Eugene as one of the favourites and delivered a controlled, tactical performance.

After the race, Cherop dedicated the victory to Uganda and thanked her coaches, teammates, family and supporters. The article also said former Olympic and world champion Joshua Cheptegei and Uganda Athletics president Dominic Otuchet praised the performance as evidence of the country’s strength in distance running and its junior development system.
