Uganda’s Asiimwe wins gold at African Para Archery Championships

The Independent Uganda, citing URN, reported that Uganda’s Precious Allan Asiimwe won the men’s Para Recurve title at the 15th African Archery Championships in Oran, Algeria, giving the country its first gold medal at the continental archery event. The competition was held from July 20 to 26, 2026, under World Archery sanction, according to the report.

Asiimwe defeated Algeria’s Izri Abdelkader in the final, which was settled by a shoot-off after a closely contested match. The Ugandan reportedly scored nine in the decisive sixth set, while Abdelkader scored seven. The Independent said Abdelkader is ranked 29th in the world, adding to the significance of Asiimwe’s win in his first appearance at the African Championships.

The report said Asiimwe, who took up archery just over a year ago, dedicated the victory to Uganda and those who supported his entry into the sport. Uganda Archery Vice President Sula Blick described the result as a major moment for the athlete and for Ugandan archery. Uganda’s team also included Bashir Mutyaba in Para Recurve and Shiloh Kamukama Ayebare in the Under-18 Recurve event, with Aisha Namukwaya as coach and Blick among the team officials.

The Independent reported that the championships brought together 180 athletes and officials from 16 countries. Asiimwe’s medal is being viewed as an important step for Uganda’s developing para sports programme and could raise local interest in archery ahead of future regional and international competitions.
