Uganda Railways adds lunchtime, evening trips on Kampala-Mukono route

Uganda Railways Corporation has expanded passenger train services on the Kampala-Namanve-Mukono corridor, adding a lunchtime trip and an extra evening service. According to Nile Post, the revised timetable takes effect on 31 August 2026 and is aimed at giving commuters more travel options while supporting affordable public transport in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

Under the new schedule, the lunchtime train is set to leave Kampala at 1:30pm, stop at Namanve and reach Mukono in the afternoon before returning later in the day. URC also introduced an additional evening trip to Mukono, alongside the existing morning and evening services already in operation. The corporation said the changes are meant to help passengers who cannot use the current peak-hour trains.

Nile Post reported that the timetable keeps the morning commuter services in place and that fares for standard coaches remain unchanged, while executive-coach fares differ by destination. URC also said it is introducing a new passenger coach with no standing option, so riders will travel seated only.

The expansion comes as URC continues work to improve commuter rail services in and around Kampala. In general, such updates matter because rail can offer a lower-cost alternative to road travel and may help ease congestion on busy urban routes, especially where demand for daily commuting is rising.
