Uganda: New Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Variant Discovered, Offering Critical Insights for Future Outbreak Response

AllAfrica, carrying a Nile Post report from Kampala dated 20 July 2026, reported that researchers have identified a previously unreported clade of Bundibugyo Ebola virus connected to the ongoing 2026 outbreak affecting Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The findings were published in The Lancet and involved the Interdisciplinary Consortium for Epidemic Research and Response (ICER) and partner institutions.

According to the report, genetic analysis of the virus from Uganda’s imported case showed it differs from viruses linked to earlier Bundibugyo Ebola outbreaks in Uganda in 2007 and the DRC in 2012. The newly described clade is associated with the current cross-border outbreak in Ituri Province and Uganda, and researchers said the finding demonstrates why genomic surveillance is important for tracking how Ebola viruses change and spread.

The work involved Uganda’s Ministry of Health, ICER, Makerere University, the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale in the DRC, Dalhousie University and other international partners. Officials and scientists quoted by Nile Post, including Prof. Bruce Kirenga, Dr. Misaki Wayengera, Dr. Henry Kyobe Bosa and Dr. Winters Muttamba, framed the discovery as evidence of the value of laboratory capacity, regional collaboration and African-led epidemic research.

The report said the variant contains several genetic changes compared with earlier Bundibugyo Ebola viruses, but added that further study is needed to understand what those changes mean. The researchers urged continued surveillance and work on diagnostics, vaccines and treatments suited to circulating strains, a priority as cross-border health systems seek to detect emerging variants early and respond more effectively to Ebola outbreaks.
