Uganda names its crude oil today ahead of market entry

Uganda is set to formally name its crude oil at a ceremony at the Kingfisher production facility in Kikuube District, near Lake Albert, as the country prepares for entry into the global market. According to The Independent Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni is expected to unveil the grade’s commercial identity during a visit tied to progress in the country’s oil and gas sector. The event follows earlier drilling activity at Kingfisher, which Museveni launched in 2023.

The report says the naming step is important because crude oil is traded by grade, with each type assigned identifiers that help buyers and refiners assess quality. Uganda’s oil is described as waxy and low in sulphur, and it is expected to move through the 1,443-kilometre East African Crude Oil Pipeline to Tanzania’s coast once exports begin. The article adds that the pipeline is reportedly more than 90% complete, while first oil is still targeted for later this year.

The Kingfisher field is operated by CNOOC Uganda Limited and is one of two major upstream projects in Uganda, alongside Tilenga, which is run by TotalEnergies. Energy Minister Monica Musenero visited the site before the president’s arrival, touring processing, drilling and waste-management facilities and being briefed on commissioning, local participation and community development. The broader oil sector has been years in the making, with commercial discoveries dating back to 2006 and a 2022 investment decision unlocking major funding for development.
