What the report says

President Yoweri Museveni has raised concerns about how the appeal in the Ggaba daycare murder case is being handled, after Christopher Okello Onyum was convicted and sentenced to death for killing four toddlers in Kampala. According to Nile Post, Museveni said the case seemed to have faded from public attention after the appeal was filed and argued that communities affected by serious crimes should be able to follow key justice proceedings.

The remarks were made on October 2, 2026, during a meeting with the NRM Caucus at Kololo in Kampala. Museveni recalled that he had previously pushed for the matter to be tried and questioned why the appeal could not also be heard in a way that remained accessible to residents of Ggaba. His comments focused on transparency and public confidence in the justice process rather than on the legal merits of the appeal itself.

The original trial drew wide attention because the High Court was temporarily moved to Ggaba Community Church under a mobile court arrangement. Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha found Onyum guilty on April 30, 2026, in connection with the April 2 killings at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre. The victims were identified as Gideon Eteku, Keisha Agenorwoth Otim, Ignatius Sseruyange and Ryan Odeke. Onyum has appealed the conviction and sentence, with the Court of Appeal expected to determine the case through the normal judicial process.
