Uganda: Museveni Commends Evangelizing Sisters of Mary for Service to Karamoja

What the report says
President Yoweri Museveni has praised the Missionary Congregation of the Evangelizing Sisters of Mary for what he described as long-running service to communities in Karamoja and other parts of Uganda. According to Nile Post, the president said the congregation has contributed to social and economic wellbeing through evangelisation, education, healthcare and support for vulnerable people.
The message was delivered by Vice President Jessica Alupo during the congregation’s Golden Jubilee celebrations at the Merciful Love of Jesus Cathedral in Moroto District on August 15, 2026. Museveni said the Sisters’ work complements government efforts to improve living conditions and highlighted their role in addressing both spiritual and material needs. He also used the event to encourage Ugandans to pursue income-generating activities and make use of existing government programmes for enterprise financing.
The report says Museveni pointed to ongoing poverty challenges and urged households to move beyond subsistence farming toward market-oriented work in areas such as agriculture, services, industry and ICT. He cited initiatives including the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, the Youth Fund and the Women Fund as ways organized groups can access support. Vice President Alupo also congratulated the congregation, saying it had promoted values such as integrity, self-sustainability and resilience.
The congregation said its five decades of work have focused on human dignity and on meeting spiritual, psychological, social, intellectual, moral and material needs. The event drew religious leaders, government officials and other guests, underscoring the organization’s regional presence and its continued role in Karamoja’s development context.
