Uganda Engages Kenya Over Deportation Concerns, Urges Citizens to Secure Work Permits

Uganda has said it is in talks with Kenyan authorities over concerns about the deportation of Ugandan nationals, while advising Ugandans living and working in Kenya to obtain valid work permits and regularise their immigration status. The comments were made by Aisha Ahmed, head of the Communications Office of the President’s Diaspora Affairs, during the launch of a high-level diaspora conference and unity marathon. She said Ugandans in Kenya should comply with permit requirements, including those who do not yet have proper documentation. Her remarks suggest the issue is being handled through discussions between Kampala and Nairobi rather than through public confrontation.

The report places the issue within a broader government effort to support Ugandans abroad. Alongside the engagement with Kenya, officials unveiled a diaspora policy meant to improve assistance such as legal support and documentation, and to encourage diaspora participation in national development. The policy and related events are intended to strengthen ties with Ugandans at home and overseas, but for those in Kenya the immediate concern remains immigration compliance amid reported deportation fears.
