Uganda Earns $800 Million Annually from Exports to Sudan, Says Trader

A Ugandan trader based in Sudan told Salam TV that Uganda earns about $800 million a year from exports to Sudan, with food and other goods continuing to move despite Sudan’s prolonged conflict. The report said Uganda has become an important supplier to the Sudanese market, supported by long-standing commercial links between the two countries.

According to Nile Post, the trader, Twaha Uthman Musa Kajaaya, said Ugandan businesses have built a major presence in what he described as Gumbo Market, which he characterized as a large outlet for Ugandan products in Sudan. He said he was speaking from 17 years of business experience in the country. The goods he cited included posho, matooke, beans, maize and other food commodities.

Kajaaya also praised the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces in Sudan, saying it had helped improve security for traders. He urged the Ugandan government to rehabilitate the Nimule road, which he described as an important export route, and called for a Ugandan bank in Sudan to make payments easier for traders.

He further said Ugandan farmers and traders in Sudan have organized themselves through an association called Farmers Association Market Vendors and Manufacturers, or FAMMS.
