Uganda Clears Final Ebola Patient, Starting 42-Day Countdown to Outbreak End

Medical Daily reported that Uganda discharged its final confirmed Ebola patient on July 16, 2026, at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, moving the country into the 42-day surveillance period required before officials can declare the outbreak over. The discharge was overseen by Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, and Uganda’s Ministry of Health and the WHO Africa Regional Office confirmed the milestone, according to the report.

The patient was described as a Congolese national who contracted Bundibugyo virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo before seeking care in Uganda. Medical Daily said Uganda declared the outbreak on May 15 after a traveler from DRC’s Ituri Province tested positive. The reported national tally was 20 confirmed cases and two deaths, with 15 cases imported from DRC and five acquired locally. The last confirmed case was reported on June 21.

The 42-day period reflects two maximum incubation cycles for Bundibugyo virus disease, which can take up to 21 days after exposure for symptoms to appear. If no additional confirmed cases are detected, Uganda could be in position to declare the outbreak over in late August 2026; any new case would reset the countdown. The report said all identified contacts had completed monitoring by July 16.

Medical Daily framed the development as significant because there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain. The outlet said Uganda relied on established outbreak-control measures including case detection, contact tracing, testing, isolation, infection prevention and supportive care. It also noted continuing risk from cross-border movement while a larger DRC outbreak remains active.
