Uganda: Bus Operators Hike Fares, Warn of More Increases in December

What the report says
Bus operators in Kampala have raised fares after a sharp increase in fuel prices, according to a November 4, 2026 report distributed by AllAfrica from Nile Post. The higher charges affect passengers traveling from the capital to destinations around Uganda, with operators saying they need to cover rising diesel and petrol costs as well as other business expenses.
At Namayiba Bus Terminal, managers said the fare changes were meant to help companies stay afloat as operating costs climb. The article says fuel prices have reportedly moved from about Shs4,000 to Shs7,000 per litre, squeezing profit margins and prompting transport firms to revise ticket prices. Nelson Sekandi, the terminal’s general manager, indicated that further increases could follow in December, when festive-season travel usually peaks.
The Northern Route Bus Association has already set new rates for trips to northern Uganda, including Kamdini, Karuma, Gulu, Kitgum, Pader and Kaabong. In parallel, the Uganda Transport Operators Federation says it plans to meet operators to discuss the wider impact of fuel costs and possible adjustments to long-distance fares.
The changes matter because they will likely raise travel costs for workers, traders and families preparing for Christmas and New Year journeys. The report suggests passengers across the country may face more expensive transport if operators proceed with additional December adjustments.
