What the report says

Airtel Uganda has paid the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) a dividend of sh42,609,880,000, reflecting returns on the fund’s shareholding in the telecoms company. The handover took place in Kampala and was reported by The Independent and distributed by AllAfrica. NSSF holds 10.6% of Airtel Uganda and is described as the largest Ugandan institutional shareholder.

Airtel Uganda’s managing director and chief executive, Soumendra Sahu, said the payment shows the value that can come from investing long-term savings in productive businesses. He linked the result to the company’s recent growth in network coverage, operational efficiency and customer service. Airtel also said it plans to keep investing in network expansion, technology and partnerships that support Uganda’s digital and economic growth.

The dividend comes shortly after NSSF announced a record 22.53% interest rate for the 2025/26 financial year, with sh5.44 trillion to be credited to members’ accounts. NSSF managing director Patrick Ayota said the Airtel investment supports sustainable long-term value for members. The report also noted that NSSF invested on behalf of its 2.6 million members and that the value of its Airtel shares had risen sharply since purchase. As background, Airtel Uganda recently launched satellite-to-mobile connectivity in partnership with Starlink, extending basic connectivity in areas beyond conventional mobile network coverage.
