What the report says

Uganda will host the second International Conference on Curriculum Development on August 20 and 21 at Speke Resort Munyonyo, with the impact of artificial intelligence and changing workplace skills among the main themes. The event is being organised by the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) and is expected to draw education experts, researchers, policymakers and practitioners from Uganda, Africa and beyond.

According to the report published by Nile Post and distributed by AllAfrica, more than 700 delegates from over 11 countries have already confirmed attendance in person or online. Conference organisers say the agenda will examine whether Uganda’s current curricula are preparing learners for the labour market, and will include keynote speeches, panel discussions, research presentations, exhibitions and breakout sessions.

The NCDC said it received 130 papers after its call for submissions, with 77 selected for presentation after peer review. Officials also used the pre-conference briefing to argue that education systems must shift beyond memorisation toward skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, communication, collaboration and innovation. The conference comes as Uganda continues wider curriculum reforms, including a revised lower secondary curriculum launched in 2022 and a review of the primary curriculum. The NCDC’s role was expanded in 2021 to include vetting external and international curricula before schools adopt them. The gathering is expected to produce practical recommendations for curriculum development in Uganda and the region.
