Uganda: 14 Killed As Truck Crashes Into Taxi in Lwera

At least 14 people were killed in a late-night crash on Uganda’s Kampala-Masaka Highway, according to reporting by Nile Post distributed through AllAfrica. Police said the collision happened around 11 p.m. on Monday at Kamunga Trading Centre in Lwera Swamp, Kalungu District, and involved a Toyota Hiace taxi and a Sino truck carrying sand.

Greater Masaka regional police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said all 14 fatalities were people travelling in the taxi. Four other people were injured, including two occupants from each vehicle, and were taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Police visited the scene and began documenting evidence as part of the investigation.

Authorities said the truck driver fled after the crash, and efforts to trace that person were under way. The report did not give a cause for the collision. Road safety remains a major concern in Uganda, where recent months have seen several deadly crashes involving public transport and school travel.
