UEDCL Upgrades Power Network in Four Western Districts

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has begun a network upgrade in western Uganda aimed at improving power supply for more than 30,000 households and 700 businesses in Isingiro, Ntungamo, Rukungiri and parts of Rwampara, according to Nile Post. The work is centered on integrating the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited’s Mirama Hills Substation into the distribution system after a 15MVA transformer was installed there.

The project started in August 2026 and is expected to finish by mid-September. UEDCL says the existing Kikagati-Ntungamo feeder is being split into two sections, with one line serving Ntungamo, Rukungiri and parts of Rwampara, and the other supplying Isingiro and nearby areas. The company says the change should add capacity, improve reliability and reduce technical losses on the network.

UEDCL’s western region head of commercial services, Eng. Alex Atukunda, said the upgrade is intended to address unreliable electricity supply and support growing industrial use in the area. The company says the project also improves evacuation of power from the Kikagati Hydropower Plant on the Kagera River.

The article says one major beneficiary is Terra Industrial Development Company in Ntungamo, an iron-processing factory with an estimated demand of about 7MVA. UEDCL also says a second phase is awaiting approval and would add more feeders, a switching station, dedicated lines and voltage-support equipment for additional sites including Inspire Africa Coffee Park.
