What the report says

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has started a nationwide stakeholder engagement drive focused on improving power-supply reliability and rebuilding communication with local leaders and communities. According to Nile Post, the first session was held in Kira Municipality, where company officials explained ongoing work to ease network constraints and respond to rising electricity demand.

Isaac Katewanga, UEDCL’s acting Chief Commercial and Operations Services Officer, said the meetings are meant to clarify the causes of supply interruptions, share updates on projects under way and collect feedback from affected areas. The company said it is combining short-term measures, such as replacing overloaded transformers and damaged infrastructure, with longer-term investments in the distribution network.

Among the projects cited are an upgrade of the transformer at Kawanda Substation and the splitting of the Seeta and Bukerere 11kV feeders. UEDCL said these efforts are intended to reduce congestion and improve voltage stability, with some works expected to benefit more than 80,000 customers in Kira, Namugongo, Kyaliwajala, Naalya and nearby areas. The utility also said it is working with the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited on broader transmission expansion in Greater Kampala.

The report said UEDCL also raised concern about vandalism and fraud linked to electricity connections, urging residents to report suspicious activity and to use approved payment channels. Local police and area leaders at the meeting backed the campaign, saying the engagement could help protect infrastructure and improve service delivery. In general, such outreach is often used by utilities to manage public expectations while technical upgrades are rolled out.
