What the report says

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has invested more than Shs240 million in electricity distribution works in Butebo District, eastern Uganda, in an effort to improve power reliability and support local business growth. According to The Independent Uganda, the projects were commissioned over the weekend and are aimed at serving both public institutions and emerging commercial activity in the area.

One part of the upgrade extends the distribution network to Petete, where Petete Primary School had already completed internal wiring but was still waiting for a grid connection. The new line also reaches Petete Church, nearby households and Petete Town Council offices, with an additional transformer installed to handle the expected demand. A second intervention was carried out in Kabarekere Village near St. Paul High School, where UEDCL installed a 100kVA transformer for a mini-industrial park under development.

The company said the former supply arrangement, based on a smaller transformer located about 600 metres away, was not enough for the park’s projected needs. UEDCL Managing Director Joselynne Rwabwogo said the upgrade was intended to provide capacity for industrial and agro-processing activity, reflecting wider concerns about rising electricity demand and outages.

The commissioning took place during a thanksgiving ceremony in Petete officiated by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja in honour of Energy Minister Monica Musenero. The investment is significant because reliable electricity is a key factor for schools, households and value-added agriculture projects in districts seeking to attract new economic activity.
