UCC Launches Drive to Digitise Music Heritage, Boost Royalties for Veteran Artists

Nile Post reports that the Uganda Communications Commission has started a national effort to preserve Uganda’s indigenous music by converting old analogue recordings into digital formats and placing them on major streaming and social platforms. The programme, called the Ataakulaba Heritage Music Initiative, is intended to protect historic recordings that are at risk of deterioration while helping veteran musicians and the estates of deceased artists earn royalties from online distribution.

According to the report, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo discussed the initiative during an appearance on NBS Television’s After 5 programme. He said many important recordings are still held on ageing tapes, including music from traditional and influential genres such as Kadongo Kamu. The project is expected to make the music available through platforms including UgaTunez, YouTube, Spotify and TikTok.

Nile Post says the initiative will include works by pioneering Ugandan musicians such as Dan Mugula, Hadijah Namale and Lord Fred Ssebatta, whose songs contributed to the development of the country’s modern music scene. UCC also aims to use the archive to expose younger listeners and upcoming artists to older Ugandan music while supporting the wider creative economy.

The report says UCC plans an official launch and ceremony to honour veteran artists on July 31, 2026, at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel Gardens. Airtel Uganda, Rose Foam and Movit Products Ltd are listed as partners. The development comes as Uganda’s music sector continues to confront questions around digital distribution, cultural preservation and fair earnings for artists.
