What the report says

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos) has concluded a five-day staff retreat aimed at strengthening teamwork, discipline and adherence to its core values. According to The Observer, the gathering brought together employees from several offices and departments, including the executive director’s office, risk management and compliance, public and media relations, and professional services.

Ubos executive director Dr Chris Mukiza used the retreat to urge staff to model professionalism, integrity, trust and commitment in their daily work. He also encouraged participants to treat constructive disagreement as part of better decision-making, while avoiding common team problems such as weak trust, poor accountability and low commitment. Deputy executive director Dr Vincent Ssenono later praised the engagement and said the sessions helped staff reflect on their individual roles and how departments can work more closely together.

The report said the retreat included interactive discussions on team dynamics and professional accountability. By the end of the event, staff were described as more united and better aligned around the bureau’s mandate of producing national statistics. Public relations officer Didacus Okoth said the experience showed teams sharing challenges more openly and developing solutions together. The broader significance is that Ubos is emphasizing institutional discipline and collaboration at a time when reliable statistical work depends on coordinated internal processes.
