What the report says

Two former security informers, Hamza Lyavala and Adiil Walusansa, have been convicted by Uganda’s General Court Martial after pleading guilty to murder in connection with bomb attacks in Munyonyo and Kalerwe that killed two women in June 2025. The court in Makindye accepted the prosecution facts and entered convictions on two counts, with sentencing expected later. The case is being heard before a military court because the alleged events involved serving or former military intelligence-linked personnel.

According to Nile Post, the prosecution said the two men had worked as informants supplying intelligence on the Allied Democratic Forces, but became involved in operations that led to the deaths of Sumaya Byaruhanga, who was killed near Munyonyo on June 3, 2025, and Azatu Sawiya, who died at Kalerwe Market on June 21, 2025. Prosecutors also allege that Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga helped organise the attacks; he has denied the allegations and is due to face trial separately.

The article says the admitted facts describe planning meetings, recruitment of women to carry the explosive devices, and coordinated movements meant to support the attacks. Prosecutors argued the operations were intended to spread fear and destabilise the country, while the defence asked for leniency. The General Court Martial is expected to sentence Lyavala and Walusansa on October 12, 2026.

The report also notes that the convictions intersect with a wider military case involving Maj Gen James Birungi, although the admitted court facts point instead to Lt Col Byaruhanga as the alleged organiser of the two bombings.
