Two sentenced to death over Ndiga clan leader murder

The High Court in Kampala has sentenced two men to death for the killing of Ndiga clan leader Eng Kakeedo Bbosa Lugya, ending the sentencing phase in a case tied to a leadership dispute within the clan. The convicts, Lugya Bbosa alias Tabula and his relative Noah Lugya alias Fake, had earlier pleaded guilty to murder and admitted facts showing they were involved in the February 25, 2024, attack in Kikandwa, Lungujja, a Kampala suburb.

According to the report by The Observer, the court heard that Bbosa was shot as he returned home after a clan function, with his wife and a househelp in the vehicle. Prosecutors said the killing was planned in advance and linked to efforts to remove him as clan leader. They cited meetings held in late 2023, as well as forensic evidence including CCTV footage, call-data records and ballistic analysis. The state said a firearm used in the attack was later recovered.

Justice David Matovu said the men’s guilty pleas, remorse and first-offender status were outweighed by the seriousness of the offence, its planning and its impact on the family, clan and wider community. Defence lawyers had asked for custodial sentences instead, arguing the men were remorseful and had personal circumstances worth considering. The court also heard emotional victim-impact evidence from Bbosa’s widow. Three other suspects remain on trial.
