Two men die in deep well while repairing water pump

What the report says
Police in Mityana District are investigating the deaths of two men who were reportedly suffocated while trying to repair a water pump in a deep well. According to Nile Post, the incident happened on Sunday, August 16, 2026, around 1 p.m. in Bifuma Village, Kakindu Sub-county, at the home of Bamulanzeeki Mohammed.
The deceased were identified as Rogers Brown and a man known only as Rasta. Wamala Region police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said preliminary information suggests Rasta went into the well first and began having breathing difficulties, apparently because of low oxygen levels. Brown then climbed down in an apparent attempt to help him, but he was also overcome.
The report says the matter was first raised by village chairman Ssemango James, after which officers from Kakindu Police Station, Mityana Police, and the Wamala Region Fire and Rescue Services responded. The team assessed the scene and later recovered the bodies, which were taken to Mityana General Hospital for postmortem examination.
Police also used the case to warn residents about safety precautions when sending people into hazardous spaces and about properly registering casual workers with local leaders. Investigations are continuing, and officials said one of the victims had not yet been fully identified beyond a nickname.
