What the report says

Two men were killed on Sunday in Lebanon’s south during the annual olive harvest in the Bint Jbeil district, according to Al Jazeera’s reporting based on Lebanese state media and local authorities. One died in Froun when a leftover munition from earlier fighting exploded, while the other was killed in Yater by Israeli shelling that struck the outskirts of the town as he was checking his land and harvest.

The Lebanese army said the fire came from an Israeli tank and described the incident as a violation of existing agreements. Local officials in Yater told residents to stay away from the area near the earthen barrier separating some neighborhoods because of the risk of further attacks. In Froun, the blast led residents to stop the harvest until the army can finish clearing unexploded ordnance.

The report said violence in southern Lebanon has eased since a ceasefire arrangement reached in June, but has not ended. Al Jazeera also placed the episode in the broader context of the Lebanon-Israel conflict, which escalated after Hezbollah began firing at Israel in support of Iran during the wider regional war. Lebanese officials have repeatedly accused Israel of hitting civilian areas, and the damage has contributed to displacement in the country.

The harvest itself has become a symbol of local resilience, with volunteers from nearby areas joining farmers in a show of solidarity despite the security risks.
