Two die in suspected suicide incidents in Kisoro

Two people died in separate suspected suicide-by-hanging incidents in Kisoro district, southwestern Uganda, within about 15 hours, according to The Observer. Police said the cases happened in different locations between Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6, and investigations are continuing.

The first incident was reported in Mataramba village, Gisozi parish, Muramba sub-county, where 80-year-old Andrew Ndagijimana was found hanging inside his house around 7 p.m. on Saturday. His wife, Tereza Nyirayanze, said she had left him at home earlier in the day and later returned to find the door locked from inside. Neighbours helped break in, after which the body was discovered.

The second case happened around 10 a.m. on Sunday in Chahi village, Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality, where Brian Mbonyebyombi was also found hanging. Police said he had reportedly returned home intoxicated and asked his wife for food shortly before she found him. Kigezi Region police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime confirmed both incidents and said preliminary findings suggested Mbonyebyombi had previously tried to take his own life, especially after heavy drinking.

The newspaper said the deaths have renewed concern about alcohol abuse and mental health in the Kigezi region. It also cited local health data showing a sizable burden of alcohol-related psychiatric cases at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, though those figures were presented as background in the report rather than part of the police investigation.
